sea ice

Yesterday we went out on the sea ice. Before we got here, they drilled two big holes. To our delight, they were filled with pteropods (the pink things)! We also scooped out some ice to play with and think about how anchor ice forms. One of the groups is studying fish and they were fishing in the holes with little spongebob squarepants fishing rods. They caught a bunch of ice fish though, which was pretty exciting.

We also learned how to drill holes in the ice, which was fun. Unfortunately we got a bigger drill than the one Dennis is holding in the picture stuck in the ice.

There was a skua that flew around and checked us out. We had heard they're really curious and this one was quite a ham.

Today we learned to set up tents in snow and ice and other survival stuff.
